Day 10 - 12

Day 10

A lay day in Baltimore with a bit of walking and sightseeing.

Gavin spent 2 hours on the boat getting it in shipshape and ran the engine to charge the batteries.

Planning for next few days - Sherkin Island, Cape Clear island, a sail out to Fastnet before heading to Schull.

Day 11

Woke up to clear blue skies and sunshine!

Mike and Gavin brought the boat alongside the quay in Baltimore to board the extended crew for a day sail out to South harbour on Cape Clear Island.

A beautiful quiet anchorage well sheltered from the NW breeze. Lunch on board whilst the younger crew took the dinghy around the bay.

A motor sail back to Baltimore as the wind increased from the west.

Everyone tired after a day on the sea in the sun so after dinner in The Algiers and a few drinks in Jacob’s on the ‘square’ to watch England beat Netherlands (strangely very quiet in the pub at full time 🤔) an early night for all.

Day 12

Full crew on board for the trip from Baltimore to Schull.

Another lovely sunny morning with a decent northwesterly breeze allowed us to motor sail under main and code zero out to the Fastnet lighthouse; this was a bucket list tick for both Mike and Gavin and a fantastic experience for everyone.

Gavin was particularly proud of his 2 granddaughters to have the opportunity to sail around the Fastnet.

A lot of whale and dolphin watching went on but only a brief sighting of a lone dolphin about 100m astern - too far away for photos.

A nice fetch under main and jib up to Schull with both granddaughters helming.

Arrived into Schull bay to be met by David Harte, an old sailing friend of Mike’s, who escorted us into the harbour and moorings in his beautiful self built motor launch.

After everyone was ashore the crew had a late lunch / early dinner in Bunrattys and then a few drinks in Hackett’s where we waited for Warren to arrive.

Then back to the house in Baltimore for a quiet night and planning the next trip from Schull to Glengarriff. Gavin also attentively studying the weather forecast for the next week as he plans the next two legs up to Galway and then Donegal.
